School Council
What is School Council?
A Massachusetts School Council is a legally required advisory group that helps guide a school’s improvement efforts and strengthens the connection between the school, families, and community.
-
Who’s on it: The principal, parents, teachers, and community members (and sometimes students at the high school level).
-
What it does: The council works with the principal to develop and review the School Improvement Plan. It advises on educational goals, student needs, the school budget, and ways to make the school a better place for learning.
-
Why it matters: It gives parents and the community a voice in shaping priorities for the school, and it helps ensure that decisions reflect a range of perspectives—not just administrators’.
